Why has almost every culture in the world convinced men that women are in need of

protection? The thing about it that strikes me as crazy is that men are protecting women from...men. I feel that women have been made to believe they aren't strong enough to protect themselves too. I wonder sometimes if men once did protect women and children from animals, and then when animals were no longer a threat, they stepped in and filled the void, becoming the threat themselves. Do women really need protection, or is it a case of men wanting to be the cause and the cure alternately?
I try to be patient with it, but women are being convinced that they are incapable of defending themselves, and it leads to feelings of inadequacy and powerlessness. I can only imagine that men struggle with the need to prove that they are not surplus to requirements. I feel pity for young men, at least, since they are disenfranchised for that very reason. They have to prove that they are not surplus to requirements more than women or children.

Sounds more like a feminist rant than a question.

Sure there are a few women who are just as strong and capable as men but for the most part women are smaller, weaker, and less aggressive. When you take a strong person (man or woman) and place them with a weaker person and then put them in a situation that requires action the strong almost always protects the weak regardless of gender.

Imagine a war time scenario where two soldiers are escaping. If one fell behind the other would most likely come back to help regardless of gender.

I don't think men "stepped in" to replace an existing threat; rape and physical domination have always been threats to women. In this day and age a woman doesn't really "need" a man for anything. Maybe pushing the protection angle is a last-ditch effort by men to make themselves feel necessary. If some women are gullible enough to fall for it, too bad for them.
