Why exactly does the UK produce so few sporting successes?

Our fantastic Olympians in Beijing notwithstanding.

And I am talking on a global scale, not inter-UK.

Football:- Overpaid pansies. On the world stage wall home nations suffer.

Rugby:- Inconsistent at the top level.

Tennis:- We cling to the likes of Murray and Henman. USA, Russia, France, Belgium and Spain have a multitude of top players.

Cricket:- Poor to average.

What is it about the UK that makes sporting success so rare? Considering the pedigree of sports victories in the past, why are we currently so bad at major sports?

Schooling?

Incorrect development of grass roots funding?

Social attitudes (i.e. "football is the only sport")?
