Why dose my 1993 ford ranger make a knock sound while driving in 4x4?

When Im driving i hit the 4x4 button to get into 4x4 mode. after about a block or two i can hear and feel a thud or knock sound. it also happens when im at a stop or while im just driving so i just turn it back off but i need to know cause i need it for winter. Thanks.
 
there could be a problem in your transfer case... if it does knock while at a stop have someone listen under the vehicle to see if you cant at least isolate where the problem is.
