Why don't we have more direct comic book adaption series?

The Smurfs was a special case, they adapted some of the adventures printed in comics but they soon created characters specially for the cartoon version like Baby Smurf, Smurflings, Grand'Pa Smurf.

There was some others European comic books who was adapted in animation series like Spirou, Lucky Luke and there some talks of adopting Gaston Lagaffe in a toon version. Asterix meanwhile have adapted cartoon movies as well as live-action.

Yeah, but all of that is irrelevant because the movies based super heroes do well and the movies don't follow the comic 100%, so why should the cartoons? The only reason they still make cartoons based on comics is because movies based on comics do so well.

I'm glad we don't get direct comic book adaptations. I always like seeing a slightly different interpretation of the story. If was really direct, I'd just read the comic book instead.

It has to do with the decades of history that have had many hands in creating iconic characters, so when making the shows they can pick and choose what to use and what not (Spec Spidey, Batman TAS) or do something new altogether with the basics of the characters history (Iron man AA, X-Men Evo).

There's also a chance of running out of material if it's based tightly around the original source material. Like that 80 episodes of filler Naruto had waiting for the Manga.

Is it weird that I prefer the old Hellsing and Fullmetal Alchemist to the Ultimate and Brotherhood versions which are supposed to be more like the Manga's? If they're what the Manga's are like then I'd rather just stick to the Anime.

I've been wondering about this for years.

There are thousands of comicbooks that would make great Animated series.
But we continue to get the same things from DC and Marvel. Who won't let anything else be animated it seems.

Something with "decades" of material, can easily be broken down to an Arc.

Really, why would you want to? Are there really that many comics so awesome that they deserve a scene-by-scene adaptation into another medium? I kinda doubt it... Especially since most of the big-name porperties started decades ago....And a lot of the stories you'd want to adapt happened much more recently, with lots of stuff you'd rather ignore in the middle.

Also, given that many comics over here go through different writers and artists (thus, art styles) adapting every single story just doesn't seem as important.

One last point: isn't it interesting that so many of the anime that closely follow a manga suffer greatly when they go off the rails of the original story? Like the Naruto fillers, or, say, the ending to Claymore. I rather like it that we have tv crews over here that can make up something on thier own and make it competant and entertaining.

runaways would be great, BUT they would most assuredly make it very childish.

and deadpool, well, unless hbo makes it like spawn, it aint gonna happen.

Runaways is just one of those things that doesn't translate to a Sat morning cartoon, besides I heard Marvel is making a movie about that anyway.

Some characters do not work well on sat morning, remember the version of Punisher that appeared on Spider-Man TAS. He was pretty lame and far cry from the Puniehr max series that come later.
