Why don't we ever reduce the military budget?

Our military budget is so insanely high. In 2006, Canada spent 18.2 billion, China spent 32.8, and Russia spent $13 billion, all reasonable amounts. The US? A whopping $663.7 billion! What the hell are we doing?

And what drives me even more crazy is that when any politician actually proposes to reduce the budget, they are labeled as traitors. I don't care if we are #1, but do we really have to spend 51 times what Russia does?

None of the countries listed are fighting the war that we are. Whether you agree with it or not, it costs money. And while I have a BA in Russian language and area studies, do you really want to compare our military to theirs?? our standard of living to theirs??

I agree that the total seems excessive though. It's also helpful to keep in mind that statistics can say whatever someone wants them to say. Numbers can lie as much as the person delivering them...
