Why don't they make TWO endings for movies !! ?

Many of my fave movies have had endings that stop me from watching them again - usually because they are either too sad or just too sudden - some I would just prefer a different ending.

These are a FEW of the sad ending films that I would pay good money to have an alternative ending. - as the HERO / GOODIE died at the end - surely it woulsn't have cost much more for a alternative scene . Spartacus
Gladiator
American Beauty
Life is Beatiful
Il Postino

I recently watched There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men both had endings that left me unsatisfied.

I know a lot of people may disagree with me but it is MY opinion.

There is always going to a sense of curiosity. Sure i might be satisfied with the ending i just saw but a part of me will be thinking the other ending might be better. Only to be left disappointed. Which will then ruin both endings for me personally. And even if i did like the alternate scene, I'll always know it isnt the real ending, regardless of how many times i convince myself. Unless of course they leave it down for you to decide for yourself which is the true ending as opposed to an 'alternate' scene which is just a cop out and Ill hate that idea even more.

But sure it is an idea worth thinking about/ trying out i suppose. I personally wont be a fan.

I wonder what would have happened if Jaws had an alternative ending...

A one in which the shark won. A damp squid methinks. :D

How about Flight of the Phoenix in which the reconstructed plane doesn't take off.

Or indeed The Italian Job in which the bus doesn't rest on the edge of a cliff. :D They get away!!

Two endings were made for Fatal Attraction. The story is that the director or producer(my memory fails me) showed a version to a select audience showing Glenn Close's character killing herself.

Apparently that miffed the audience and so a new version was shot showing close's character being shot through the head.

The ending is bound to stay with you after you leave the cinema or eject the DVD, so you can be sure that the director will have a clear idea of what he (or she) wants you to remember, and how you should feel. One of the worst ways a story can end is for all the enRAB to be tied up: he went to jail, she moved in with her lover, the conman's victims got all their money back, the dog recovered and the kiRAB went to live with their doting grandparents. We need to feel that life goes on in all its complexity and a simplistic happy ending can ruin an otherwise enjoyable film.

Because films have a story that has a beginning, middle and end. Literature, movies, TV can't cater completely to the individual taste. Bad things happen in life, it can't all be happy endings.

Yes I get 'upset' (catharisis really) at some movie endings, but that often makes the move so much more appealing.

I like books with multiple endings. "The Story of O" is one example (which also has two beginnings), and "The French Lieutenant's Woman" is another. The latter was made into a film, with the unusual tone of the book not being straightforward to adapt, but I think it tries to get both endings in, after a fashion.

What about films that tell you what the ending is going to be right at the start? And keep reminding you of it? I'm thinking here of Moulin Rouge. They could hardly change that one to, "And they gave her some penicillin and she got better".

I have a few DVD's that have alternate endings which with Stigmata you can choose from the menu at the beggining which ending you want incorporated into the film.
My region 1 version of T2 has the theatrical version, the special edition version and an extended special edition version which has a different ending which is accessed by entering the date of judgement day at the menu screen.
I Am Legend has the film also on disc 2 with a different ending which ive not seen yet.
Region 1, Blade 3 Extreme Edition has the option of showing the theatrical version or the extended version which has an alternate ending.(not sure if region2 is the same or not)
Most of my other DVD's just show alternate endings as extra clips in the special features.

Silver Dream Racer with David Essex had 2 endings. In the US ending our hero wins the race... the end. In the uk it's different.:D
