Why don't the Military take people with asthma, but allow their soldiers to smoke ciggs?

I have Asthma, and I'm trying to join the Military. Right now my recruiter is trying to get a waiver but I don't know if I'mma be able to join. I am a very active person. I know people who smoke who are active as well and they can't keep up with me. Smoking is just as bad as having Asthma and if someone continues to smoke, it will get worse, so I don't understand it.
David, you have a point - with the Asthma attack. But still, smokers are just as unhealthy - and they are continuing to smoke - and the military doesn't even make them stop.
I stop using the inhaler a long time ago, i don't take meds
Yggdrasil - I know for a fact that isn't true, I know a few people in the Army who has Asthma that is worse than mine.
Oh he could quit smoking? You think because he quit smoking it will stop affecting his lungs? I've played sports all my life - with Asthma. 1.5 in 7 minutes and 12 seconds, I ran that in High School. You think all people with Asthma have Asthma attacks?

I can see that some of you really don't understand what Asthma is - and the fact that there are different types of asthma
I'm sure when I get 80 years old I will be on a breathing machine right along with your friend who smokes - in fact he may not even make it there
LOL - I'm laughing at you. Just because you were kicked out of the Military with your weak a$$ because you couldn't handle it - doesn't mean I can't.
 
You will NOT get a waiver if you had symptoms after your 13th B'Day. PERIOD! END OF STATEMENT! There are NO waivers, regardless of what you have been told.

Also, whether or not people smoke is completely irrelevant to your own health issues. It is simply a matter of the regulations...and YOU ain't getting in if you don't meet the requirements. You can rationalize all you want...it won't change a thing.

Why am I being such a prick about it? Simple, This USAF Captain (Clinical Psychologist) was discharged medically for Asthma (and several Vietnam related issues). I worked in the hospital and had letters from everybody, including the Hospital Commander (MD- Brigadier General). We were terribly understaffed for my career field at the time...and the whole of the f***ing medical corps was trying to keep me in. I could have had a letter from the Pope and the President and it wouldn't mean diddly. NOT QUALIFIED FOR WORLDWIDE DUTY means just what it says.

RULE #1: Life isn't fair.
 
Run 5 miles without stopping and see how you can handle it with your asthma. Alls you do in the Army is RUN, RUN, RUN, RUN, RUN, RUN then just when you think you have had enough, you run some more.
 
I used to have a room mate who smoked. He ran a 1.5 mile in 7 minutes/12 seconds. Don't know how but he did. If I needed him to cover me he could. I don't have to worry about a smoker having an attack. Plus he could always quit. You can't quit asthma.
