Why don't some people understand why others enlist in the Military (Marines)?

Ok so I'm in the 11th grade and peps are asking me what college I'ma go to or what career will I be pursuing but I tell them I'll be enlisting in the USMC and all of a sudden it's like an akward silent moment. They say 'what!' or 'why?' or 'do you want to die already?' or the most common one of all 'Are you dumb?'

I just don't get it.
 
Well, if you're that nationalistic or just that willing to see the truth or wield a gun, go for it. No matter how powerful the US Military may be, it's still going to need a lot more to be able to defeat countries like Russia and China if there ever will be another major war.
