Why don't most americans research who really engineered our financial collapse?

The American culture is a blame culture, politically this makes it easier to divert attention from where the real problems are. Through the cold war it was the communists, the McCarthy trials was one example where their most recent witch-hunts, suggesting all American communists sole purpose was the destruction of their society.
Under the last administration the Muslims were the enemy.
They blamed Iraq for 9/11 when even after years of trying to substantiate this even using torture in Guantanamo, yet no evidence has ever been found.
Even in society it is a common reaction to look for someone else to blame;
Blame is put on immigrants for high unemployment.
Crime is blamed on blacks and other ethnic minorities. Or alternatively blamed on those who do not follow a religion.
High divorce rate blamed on feminism.
Breakdown in society is blamed again on feminists or homosexuals.
The legal system make their money out of looking for others to blame, the extent of the absurd lengths this can go in The United States was the obese man who sued a burger chain for causing his obesity.
Having said this they are not the only nationality to do this though they do seem to take taken it to a new level.
Your own opinion takes intelligence, serious reflection and consideration of the facts. It is far easier to believe the soundbites put forward by those with an agenda whether the politicians, media, church or a group with their own agenda or an axe to grind than to independently research the facts and come to your own conclusion.
