Why don't I get birds in my garden?

I have a feeding station on which I put all sorts of bird food to appeal to a wide range of birds but they don't seem to eat it much and it goes to waste. I have seen birds but they are mainly bigger ones such as blackbirds, pigeons etc. My mother lives about 2 miles away and she has countless small birds visiting her feeding area. What am I doing wrong? I have two cats which probably don't help, but the feeding station is well concealed in the garden. I must add that a nesting box has been used twice this year by Great Tits.

Seeds will only appeal to a certain number of birds - parrots will eat seeds that are up higher or that are not concealed in a garden where they don't normally forage (they forage in trees or more open grass areas).
Pigeons and black birds will love your feeding station if it has seed.
In my garden we have lots of native flowers. We have a range of nectar eaters coming in to feed, and then they take a bath or drink in our bird bath - sometimes we have huge flocks of tiny silvereyes!
If you want to attract different birds, maybe try some fruit, fruit juice diluted in water (in a bowl or saucer of course) or even a nectar substitute powder which you can mix with water or sprinkle on fruit.
