Why don't criminals have the option to choose the army over jail anymore?

Because there are too many violent ones that would be dangerous to their comrades. The rest would go AWOL. Also, we have an all volunteer army, your way would make it enlistment through coercion.
 
I think it would be a great choice. It's like their way of paying back society for doing wrong (If they choose to). It would also give them discipline which they most likely lack, seeing as how they are commiting crimes. Instead of young, smart, right out of high school kids going into war and getting killed.
 
Other members of the military probably wouldn't want to risk their lives in a unit with a questionable criminal type. You have to be able to trust and count on the soldiers with you.
 
I think now-a-days criminals are more insane than before so why give a gun to them? lol. Plus they would probably end up awol and to mexico with the first chance presented to them. Lol At least that's what I would assume.
