Why dont Americans care about the environment or anyone else in the world?

Big generalisation i know, but America is the world's biggest polluter (per person easily, and nominally slightly ahead of china), everyone drives trucks or SUVs, and American efforts to reverse the trend seem pretty half hearted compared with most of Europe. Even some politicans want to increase oil production... "there's not much left, so let's burn it even faster!"...

And not to mention US foreign policy, propping up pro-US dictators in oil rich countries, supporting Israel's oppression of the Palestinians, invading Iraq...

Most Americans dont own a passport... maybe the world outside America seems just too far away to care about.

Canada and Australia aren't much better environmentally either.

Palestinians has nothing to do with oil energy or the environment, how you come to that conclusion is beyond me. Alternative energy sources is the key. Global warming is real and nuclear power is a safe viable option that has been used (safely) in France for decades.

I think most people believe that environmental issues are SO big that they could never affect them. Or others believe that it is all a scam by liberals.

Whether or not we believe in climate change I think anyone could agree that we Americans are incredibly wasteful.

From the amount of garbage we make to the amount of food/water we just throw away it is sort of insulting. So many people are starving and we complain about the pettiest of things.

I think you should brush up on your information..... I didn't notice that you posted any sources.

God bless America

Tom, you might want to do 5 minutes of research before you ask a dumb question like this. Thanks to Gore and the US congress, the US leads the world in green initiatives even to the point of handicapping our own economy.

Actually, we have gone much further in reductions than Europe. Google it.

However, we don't believe, most of us, in the Kyoto treaty approach which would shift industry and jobs to countries where industry is dirtier, making the problem worse, in the name of 'the environment.'

We aren't idiots.

i don't see india and china doing much better. they are both rushing headlong into environmental ruin for the sake of industrialization. the average consumer does not consume the bulk of natural resources or release massive levels of pollution. we honestly couldn't afford to. the people who don't care about the environment are not people at all. the corporations in pursuit of profit and control know no bounds. compare the rates of industrialization and pollution and should have your answer. the corps are the problem.

its because they really don't care about the enviorment and all that stuff that much, sure its on there minds but its really about protesting against america. like the anti war people, where are they now they have there lackey in the white house and now they don't care about our american soldiers dying in Afghanistan, the enviorlemtal junkies have there mission but its not about the enviorment.

We are smart enough to realize that every barrel of oil that is economically feasible to be used will be. What matters if we use it while it is cheap or if China does, at least we have pollution controls.

Over the past decade, the right wing has given more control to the rich and power and less to the people by playing on the "government is bad" and "private industry is good" policy.

So, we are control by those with the money and power.

Look at the problems with Enron to AIG, all created by power given to them by our government.

Energy, oil, money, everything is controlled by the few at the top.

Remember George Orwells, 1984? It's closer than anyone thinks.

Hmmm. I think you might be mistaken. What you are hearing are those in the thrall of corporations who spout their talking points, erroneously believing them to be their own due to years of materialistic indoctrination.

No, there are many who actually do care, whom are called anti-American for caring.

Do you do your research before you post questions, or do you just post a comment? If you do research, i would like to see your statistics, quotations, or whatever else you used to come up with your believes. While yes, it may be so America produces the most pollution, there are some key factors you are missing. America is one of the biggest countries, as well as one of the furthest along in technological advances. It makes perfect sense why we would use every machine we could to the fullest advantage. Secondly, most of the pollution was done around the 1900's up until the 1960's or so. Early cars produced an insane amount of pollution, much more then the cars of today to. If we stopped driving cars, it wouldn't help either. Also, trains have caused much pollution. Lastly, humans are the main source of pollution. By exhaling as producing gas, we are the number one cause of pollution. And most americans don't own passports, because they have no need to visit another country, not because they don't care. Why would i travel to russia, if i do not need to?
