Why don't all games work when my PS2 is connected with a component cable?

Well, my PS2 didn't look too good on my HDTV. I bought a component cable (the kind with three plugs for the video alone: red, blue, and green) at a local game store. I changed the console settings for this type of connection, booted up Socom 3, and was immediately impressed with the difference in video quality. It looks just as good as PS2 looked on a CRT.

Then I pop in Timesplitters 3 and it freezes at the game title. Through trial and error, I realized that my DVD-ROMs work fine and other titles, like Tekken 5, do not. I realize I can switch back and forth between two different types of connections, but that's a pain. I also tried changing the settings back to their default in the PS2 menu, but my TV image turns to crap whenever I do this. It was fine switching up, but switching down "confuses" my TV too much.

Any solutions? Other than going back to the standard yellow, white, red cable?
