I don't get this. I went to Afghanistan as a contractor until Feb. 2009, and the situation on the highways was a mess. If you were a foreigner, you COULD NOT safely take a regular bus down from Kabul to Kandahar. Even Afghans couldn't safely transit from Kandahar up to Herat - there were so many roadblocks, and people were robbed and executed at those things.
Why in the heck does the American military permit this? The highways are not that long - they can easily be surveyed both by constant patrols, and by aerial imagery. If you see a bunch of Talibs setting up an illegal checkpoint on the highway, why not just light them up with a Hellfire?
I really don't get it. If I ran the military, I could definitely do a better job than General McKiernan, or whoever is in charge right now.
