Why doesn't Sprint let you keep your old phone when you get it replaced?

your old phone is defective thats why they replaced the phone.. it was an exchange thats why they get the old phone in exchange for another phone

My old HTC touch pro wasn't working properly so I wanted to get it replaced. They ordered another HTC touch pro and transfered the sim card and contacts, but wouldn't let me keep my old HTCTP. I normally wouldn't care, but my old phone still has things on its hard drive that I don't have on the replacement. I am going to go back down there tomorrow to see if they'll give me my old phone, but I was wondering why they didn't let me keep it in the first place? Seems kind of dumb..
Well, I had my LG Musiq replaced and they let me keep the old phone, so....
