Why doesn't NPR call a spade a spade?

They call illegals "undocumented workers". What's up with that? If you see a rock don't you call it a rock or do you call it a piece of "geological matter"? Or if you see a toilet plunger don't you call it a toilet plunger or a "plumbing utility of great value"?
