Why doesn't my flash drive work?

This has happened to me twice, and I am wondering what the problem is.

I've had my flash drive on my key chain for a while now, and when I've tried to use it recently, it just would not be read by the computer. I don't know what could have caused it and I want to know if there's a way to fix it. I don't know if maybe a magnet was put next to it or if it got too hot from being in my pocket, but neither seems plausible. I also cleaned the end where it reads thinking lint got in it, but it still wouldn't read. I finally opened it and found that the flash drive was simply just a micro sd that was glued on a board. Oddly enough, the first flash drive this happened to starting working again when it has the same symptoms. I just now put it in and it works miraculously.

I'm wondering that maybe some kind of software on the computers I use at school may be doing this and maybe there's a way to protect the flash drives. I also want to know if there's some kind of software that will automatically detect and backup specific flash drives when I put them in my computer.
