Why doesn't my computer/windows media player recognize my ipod?

When I plug it in, the there's a button for safely removing hardware.
But it never recognized new software, and windows media player keeps telling me I need to add a device, so I don't know what to do. I just want to put my songs on there, lol, and I can't get the ipod recognized.
What should I do?
 
Ipod needs itunes, it doesnt work with windows media player..

go to google and type in 'download itunes' It's free to download.
