Why doesn't Chrome have a drop down address bar menu?

Just like in Internet Explorer or Firefox, it would be great to have one drop down next to the (back button) or the address bar showing the history of the sites I had visited earlier. As of now, I need to open a new tab, then go to history and the look out for one.

is there an extension for that?
