why does windows media player open whenever i open any of my files?

everytime i open any of my files,windows media player opens instead of the file im trying to open. it says something about its path. im using windows xp,please help me!
UPDATE:
its not only audio/video files. most of the files are .exe files,i saw some people posting this question on other websites but there's no answer..i hope someone can answer this!
 
Many people are having problems with windows xp since it is running out of time. not much in update for it anymore. Would be a good suggestion to upgrade your operating system to a newer version like windows 7 or vista. yes they cost some money. But you can get a free one Linux Mint 8 or Ubuntu 9.04. absolutely free and they stay up to date. Good security and free programs.
