Why does TV get so much hate in the argument of television vs Reading?

I know a lot of what they show on tv is utter rubbish but there are some other good shows out there that are not defined as "educational" that also can benefit you depending on how you process things.

Shows like South Park and The simpsons have motivated me to look up certain issues in the world today so I could understand certain jokes clearer. Shows like Dexter, Californication, Weeds etc have led me to a lot of great music. My favorite show LOST is what actually got me back into reading on a regular basis. Throughout the show there are themes from novels like Fahrenheit 451, Alice in Wonderland, Of Mice and Men, The Stand. The old school Twilight Zone series actually has gotten me interested in writing my own sci-fi novel.

I enjoy reading too and I actually want to start reading even more, but all I'm saying is that television is a certain art form of its own and I think that those who become lazy and allows it to rot their brain are those who allow it to make them lazy and rot their brain.

Reading fiction is the same as watching sit com, or cop-drama on television. Reading a reference book or encyclopedia is the same as watching the history channel.

I know many people I consider border line retarded who read atleast 3 fiction books a week. They might as well just watch mindless television non stop all day.

I've come to 2 conclusions on that argument:

1.) The people pushing reading over TV are dinosaurs who dont want to/don't have the capacity to adapt to the explosion of widespread media (tv, internet, etc..)

2.) everything on TV is an ignorant abridged ripoff/version of what has already been written in the 4000+ years of written language, and TV is a distraction from that.

You gotta understand i'd wager 90% of all TV shows' sole purpose is to make money so it will be formed/limitated to that end.
Books on the other hand, aren't as restricted in their content and are capable of a much richer form of entertainment, albeit different than what most of us TV/internet generations are used to.
