Why does the news media and political outlets try to cause a panic?

Why do these organizations turn every story into the worst thing that's ever happened? Whether it's the economy or the swine flu, it seems like these groups just jump from one story to the next, turning each one into a crisis or epidemic of unparalleled proportions.
