Why does the Media / News Reporters...?

Why does the Media / News Reporters focus on candidates personal lives and running around the country trying to dig up petty stories or issues that have nothing to do with real issues that affect the country? Why don't they report on things that are important like what have the candidates actually done as Senators & Governors. What are their actual detailed plans to fix the things "they say" are broken?
 
When you have a candidate who is running for, lets say, Vice President, and that person is on record as opposing any type of sex education, then if that person has a pregnant teenaged daughter, it becomes the news.
