Why does the media like to portray men and women in this stereotypical way?

Like, SpikeTV and Lifetime- Tv for men and telivision for women. One has violence, science fiction, video games, cartoons, etc. Lifetime has soap operas and drama. Well more women I know than not like violence and science fiction, and I know too many guys that start drama. So why is this what is is?
 
people think they know what everybody wants. i prefer the violence and action thrillers, cuz im not a complete mushy girly-girl type, i don't think i ever can be i like running around too much for that lifestyle of sitting around being pretty like a picture on the wall.
