Why does the LDS Church teach that Jesus paid for our sins in the garden of Gethsemane?

Why does the LDS Church teach that Jesus paid for our sins in the garden of Gethsemane when 1Pet. 2:24 says that it was on the cross?
Just because one asks questions of a particular faith doesn't mean one has it in for you. You should be happy to just answer the question if what you say if the truth without the snide remarks or in some cases bigoted answers
~Josh~ I mislead nobody since that is why I ask the question. If I already knew the answer I would not have asked. Obviously I lacked clarity in this instance and thanks for your answer
