Why does the lama ring the bell in the movie 2012?

Was this lama a Buddhist? According to traditional Buddhist belief, bell ringing purified the holy place. Like a consecration ceremony in a Christian church where the priest splashes some holy water about, and maybe burns some incense, with a few incantations. Maybe it was supposed to help those who were about to loose their lives to enter heaven, or some such thing?
