why does the English language distort and twist names that come from other cultures?

i was trying to fined out how to wright the name of the Greek poet Homeros in English
and it took me allot of time to find out he is called Homer in English...
i am not a Greek speaker and not an English speaker... but when it comes to Greek and Latin names i usually know them in there original form... and from my experience that how they are pronounced in most languages, except for English... can some one tell me why and how it cam to be?
