Why does the education system force people to take algebra?

Most people use algebra in their lives, but it just goes by without notice in day to day activities. You don't sit down with a calculator, because your day-to-day algebra is so natural that you don't even have to think about it.

Calculating a tip?

How much farther can you go before needing more gas?

Which brand of soda is the better deal this week?

Those are just some really basic examples of "normal everyday life."

If you go into a career, more than likely you'll have much more algebra to do than you expect.
 
Very few people need algebra in real life, regular math is fine, but algebra???
