Why does the "Browser" application on my BlackBerry always look like it's still...

..."running"? My wife and I just got BlackBerry Curves (both 8530's). I'm familiar with how a BlackBerry works, however, when I hold the menu button in for a second to see what applications are "running", I notice that "Browser", "BlackBerry Messenger" and "Messages" are running.

The Browser ESPECIALLY, I know I am NOT running, but still shows as running. Why? Is this something that is one of those "mandatory" processes that must be running in the background? If so, that's fine...I just wanted to know either way. If these processes CAN be shut off somehow, how does one do that?
