why does the brake and battery warning lights come on, on my toyota 4runner?

i have a 1989 toyota 4 runner i bought recently. ive had it for 2 weeks. these lights never came on until recently-- a few days ago. the brake and battery warning lights will come on for a while, and shut off. stay on for 15 min, turn off. i took it to my mechanic and he checked the charging system and he said everything was OK. but the lights still come on. why? ? ? ? ? does anyone know???? something has to be up because the lights didnt come on until a few days ago
