Why does so much of religion focus on sex and gender roles?

Homosexuality, abortion, feminine dress, male leadership, etc.

Why do these seem to be the focus more than war, the homeless, the sick, etc.?
 
When you attack gender and sex it's easier to gain power and keep people afraid than if you try to battle just and righteous causes.

EDIT: It's a circle of fear, make people think they are dirty and sinful with their natural sexual desires, so that they will come to you looking for salvation.
