Why does so many main stream news outlets report about how much a money a movie...

I hear you there! I went to see that new Star Trek movie at our local theater and before the featured started. I viewed all those dumb onscreen advertisements and to my amazement near the end there was some huge letters that stretched all the way across the screen reading "The overall budget for the feature you are about to see ran into the hundreds of millions of dollars. We'll at that point I began to fear that if it costs that much to make this flick I was once again in for a big disappointment. In retrospect this movie would be lousy.

Incidentally, the new Star Trek movie in a general sense reminded me more of that Star Trek Nemesis version with a different cast of characters.

It's apart of shaping the culture/advertising. The movie and the TV industry aren't too far apart...they actually fall under the same category:MEDIA. Interesting question, but there are websites dedicated to how much movies make each week, and the top earning movies: boxofficemojo.com for one...
