He was not arguing for aliens designing us, he was responding to a question that Ben Stein asked. The question was something along the lines of "How could Intelligent Design be at all plausible?" This is the only possible way for ID to work, and even then the aliens would have to have evolved normally.
No one worships Dawkins, at the very most we enjoy his work.
