Why does our culture have such a simplistic view of the seasonal cycle?

Nearly all of popular culture in the United States defines the four seasons by snow, flowers, heat and colorful leaves. But this picture is really only accurate in a narrow range of climates, namely, humid continental climates with warm summers and cold winters. If the traditional symbols don't work so well for everyone else, why keep using them all the time in nearly all of the nation's climate zones?
