why does my yamaha v star motorcycle slip out of first gear?

It could have a bent shifter fork from being stomped into gear or it could have a worn shifter clutch dog on the first gear cluster.Try rolling off the throttle when it does it and see if it goes back into gear by itself as it falls towards idle.If it does chances are good it's the clutch dog.Either one requires a tear down to fix.
