Why does my stereo make a high pitch squeal when connected to a laptop?

I'm trying to connect my laptop to my stereo amplifier using a 3.5mm Stereo Plug to 2 RCA plugs. The problem is that whenever i connect it to any laptop the stereo produces a high pitch ringing sound, but when I connect the 3.5mm jack to an i-pod or my desktop's headphone jack the sound is just fine. Any reason why it only produces the sound when connected to a laptop?
