Why does my puppy whine for nothing?

My almost 1 yr old Pitbull whines for no reason. I think its because we let him on the couch sometimes and we want him to come up only when we tell him he is allowed. So now when we sit on the couch, he will whine and bark in our faces. Or when we're doing things other than paying attention to him, he whines constantly. He really doesn't like to play on his own. I know he requires alot of attention, but he is wanting it 24/7. Is there anything we can do to get him to be ok on his own when we're home? Also, he likes to lick which is fine but when he gets excited or just in general he likes to nip and bite. I know dogs do this but it becomes a problem when kids are around. I don't know how to get him to stop, I ignore him when he bites or nips at me. We have trained him that when he's doing something bad, he gets a spray of water in his face. He's terrified of the spraybottle but he still likes to nip at our hands and clothes. Please give me advice.
 
I think his whinning has become habbit. He thinks that whinning is what he is to do when asking for something. He sounds like a real cute dog. He is still a puppy and loves attention....he will grow out of that and you will miss it so much.
