Why does my kitten have crazy, aggressive mood swings?

My kitten has the most crazy, aggressive mood swings. One moment he'll be purring and kneading my chest, then the next moment he'll be growling and attacking me with his ears back. I try disciplining him by blowing on his face, giving him a firm "no," etc, but nothing works.

If I blow on him, he'll stop briefly. But then he does this weird thing where he circles back and forth around my hand, meowing angrily and swatting the air he desperately wants to bite it. Then a few seconds later he'll freak out and attack again. If I try to keep my hands away, he'll just go for my face instead.

I never "smother" him with attention; if he walks away or doesn't want to be petted anymore, then I'll leave him alone. I'll can be completely ignoring him, and he'll still attack.

Sometimes he's so sweet, but sometimes (usually at night) he goes berserk. Help!

my cat mike used to be like that he was the most loving kitten then he would just attack. I though it was cause me and my girlfriend worked from 3pm to about 1am every night then slept till about noon. i thought maybe he was alone to much. So i got another cat and he calmed down once he had a playmate. Now he's the nicest cat ever.
But also he could just want to play

I would bet good money your kitten was mistreated before you adopted it, or it did not spend enough time with its mother.

Imagine if a human were not socialized properly or did not grow up with a mother; he or she would have problems.

Your kitten may grow out of this, but it may take time.

I have a cat that used to have behavior problems. It would bite (playfully) if touched in certain spots. As it got much older (8+ years), it has calmed down. It had a sister, who was much more tame even though they both grew up in the same environment and household.

So, part of it is the biological nature of the cat, which you cannot change. I would give your kitten time to mature. It would be nice if your kitten could be around its mother or siblings, but that is not always possible.

Good luck. Please have patience with your new friend. He needs you!
