its an atuo trans and i had a couple people check it out they sat in it shifted it and said it was fine. one guy even said my U-joints are still ok. its a 96 by the way. it really only makes the noise when put into drive. other than that it drives good i just hear a small squealing sound once in a while it will come and go but what about the clunk noise????

Shifting into D on my '96 Cherokee makes that THUNK too. It's normal. Don't worry about it.

It's made that thunk every time I shifted it in the past 13 years I've owned the car. No problems.
