why does my iPod (5th generation) continue to flash "Do Not Disconnect?"?

Both my computer and iTunes detect my iPod, but it continues to flash "Do Not Disconnect." I am also unable to see what songs are on my iPod through iTunes. I have the most recent iTunes update.

Possibly unrelated (might help) but most videos are not compatible with my iPod even with a converter.
