Ok, A brief summary,
I have a 1999, Oldsmobile 88 which had the standard stock stereo system. When I first got the car, the front and rear speakers sounded very strained and worn out (possibly blown). So i picked up a pair of Alpine 6x9's for the rear, and Pioneer 5.25's for the front. i also had Circuit City install a new Sony Head unit before *I* installed the speakers later that day. (stock stereo lacked CD player) Later that night after I installed the speakers, the system sounded great... sounded like a new car's system would sound right from the dealer. several days later (3-4) I noticed a "cracking" noise coming from the front RIGHT speaker. I pulled over into a parking lot and listened carefully and could actually hear what sounded like the speaker "crackling" when bass was present. It sounded like the OLD stock speakers did prior to replacement. I returned the 5.25" speakers and bought higher quality pioneer speakers. after about 2 weeks, I noticed the SAME crackling sound again coming from that same speaker. concerned i brought my car to a local audio installer who said that the crossovers were burnt out and that it is either the headunit or the wiring and that I should purchase a 4-channel amplifier and replace those speakers again. I didn't purchase the 4-channel amp, but paid $90 to have MTX 5.25" speakers installed in the front with their RMS much higher than my sony headunit can put out. Within 2 hours, the front RIGHT speaker is crackling again. I am tempted to go back to circuit city and demand a refund but I dont know if they will even honor it as the installer never gave me a receipt, in fact... they threw all the packaging away and told me that I was "ready to go". Should I try to have circuit city replace the unit with a better model and see if it fixes the issue? should i purchase the 4-channel amp? both? neither? any ideas / suggestions would be great as I am tired of listening to songs, even songs without much bass and hearing what sounds like static.
