Why does my friends xbox arcade only say open tray when it has a disc in it. does anyone know why?

my friend has the xbox 360 arcade and on Sunday he turned it off and when he turned it on and put a disc in it it said open tray. he has tried various Games, DVD's and CD's but it says the same thing. Does anyone know why?
