Why does my Ford Taurus' engine performs strangely with the air conditioner on?

About a week ago, my 2003 Ford Taurus started acting bizarre when the air conditioner was operating. Every few minutes while driving, there's a soft click-like sound simultaneously with a sudden and brief drop in acceleration or RPMs. Then, it almost immediately returns to normal until the next time. It's difficult to describe, but I'd like to get a general feel for what it could potentially be prior to taking it to the mechanic.

Thanks for any help!

There are a number of reasons that this could be happening. Everytime your A/C pump kicks on, it puts a load on the motor. The best thing to do is take it to a mechanic and they will duplicate the problem and figure it out from there. It's impossible to have somebody tell you what the problem is without looking at it. Possible IAC motor, engine misfire, dirty throttle body, or just a plain ol' tune-up could fix this problem.
