Why does my dog whine/cry when we return home?

Okay, we adopted her from the local shelter, apparently she was rescued from her home in Mississippi during Katrina.
Everytime we go out to the store, for only 30 minutes, and we open the door, Nicole[Our dog] comes running out, crying and jumping on us.
 
shes welcoming you home when other wild dogs, coyotes or wolves are long for long the pack welcomes them with howling and crying its just normal canine behavior. you can stop the jumping but ive never been able to stop the whining or howling if anybody knows how let me know.
