Why does my dog keep whining at night?

I have a 15-month old chihuahua puppy named Candi. At night, we put her in a cage with blankets and towels in it. Her crate is under the stairs in the laundry room. We try to make her cage as comfortable as possible, but she drags out all the blankets in the morning.

At night, when we got to bed upstairs, we can hear her whining, barking, and scratching at the door. Why does she do that? We got her about a year ago, and she just started doing this about 5 months ago. Can anybody tell me why?
But, my mom doesn't want us to move her cage closer to us cause we all sleep upstairs and we want her to know that she's not supposed to be upstairs. If she thinks she can go upstairs, she will steal my stuffed animals and chew on them or she will make an accident.
She never did that the first half-year we got her though.
300zx i already tried that before.

she just feels lonely. can you move her crate to your room? she got used to being around you guys and now when you leave her at night shes just scared and lonely.

I have a 8 year old chihuahua that does the same. We have to lock him up at nite and he whines and jumps up and down scratching at the bathroom door. He is fine if we let him in the bed with us. She is just lonely hon and wants to be with you. Find her a large teddy bear to sleep with, like you would a small child.
