I have a two-year old border collie mix. She's a really sweet girl, but is a big scaredy-dog.
But she has this habit of eating the fence whenever my father practices golf swings in the backyard.
We have never lifted a golf club against her nor have we shown her any violent tendencies with one. In fact, she stands next to the fence and looks at my dad with these big, shining eyes and wagging tail like she WANTS him to practice. I don't think she eats the fence because she's scared, but I'm not sure why she does it in the first place.
Also: she always growls and hops around while eating the fence like she's having the time of her life. It confuses the heck out of my and I'm wondering how we can make her stop. (Because she's already chewed a hole through the wood...)
