Why does my cat talk back when I discipline him?

Anytime my cat is doing something he shouldn't be doing, like scratching the furniture, trying to knock over my drink glass or making a bunch of noise by my head while I try to sleep, I tell him 'no' in a firm voice. He lets out something like a yelp or squeaky dog bark right at me. He stares at me like he's challenging me and gets all upset, whining and finally walking away after a time. He knows I'm like his mom and I'm in charge, so why does he always do this? It's kind of cute, but I don't understand why he gives me such a hard time.
