Why does my cat just lick the gravy from can food?

Ive tried a lot of can foods... he seems to like friskies... But 95% goes to waste. Ive watched him, he licks all of the gracy that runs around the can food when I put it on a plate then nibbles a little at the food but leaves it to waste.

Ive tried mashing it... dicing it... you name it. He does it a lot of dry food and gets water but he worries me about not eating the can food.

Any ideas? He is 3 years old.
