Why does my cat bite herself while grooming?

I have a 1 1/2 year old female cat and while she is grooming herself she appears to stop and nibble or bite at her fur. We've caught her pulling out fur before (due to stress most likely) and I'm not sure if this biting is normal or her pulling out fur again. I've seen her bite her fur a lot and she appears to be over the pulling out of fur but I can't figure out why she is nibbling at herself.

There's something in her fur that she wants out. It could be a spot of something sticky or it could be the beginnings of a knot or matting that she wants out.

Unless she's pulling fur out in chunks and starts creating bald patches, it's nothing to worry about and is similar to a human working a brush to clear a knot out.

She probably might have a knot, an itch, fleas, ect. Or something like that. It's normal, but make sure she don't pull out too much fur while doing it. If so, you might want to have her checked on by the vet. Our cats do the same thing, but it isn't that bad yet.
