Why does my car stereo cut off and start crackling when I raise it to a certain volume?

I have a 2006 Ford Focus w/ a factory cd player. whenever the volume reaches a certain level the music cuts of and crackling comes from all speakers. This happens even before the volume is maxed out. what could be causing this? please help, my knowledge of electronics is limited.

Something might be wrong with the wiring, something might be wrong with the speakers, of the factory stereo, there might be a short somewhere, theres a lot of things that could be wrong. But most likely the speakers in your car are really crappy and dont allow you to turn the music up loud haha

It sounds like the amplifier is failing. If the stereo system is a factory stock system, then you might be able to get it covered under warranty.

It might just be a low quality deck/cabling/speaker system. If there's not enough juice running through it the sound is going to distort the higher the volume goes. There could be a short somewhere, I suppose, but it's probably just the system not being designed for high volume.
